The matchup between the Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays, however exciting in terms of baseball purism, isn't likely to set the TV ratings world afire. In fact, some fear it could be the lowest-rated World Series ever.

You've got a worst-to-first story and the eventual victor of a hard fought NL East war of attrition. You don't have a petty primadonna backstory. You want good baseball by teams that ought to be there, you should watch this. I'd worry about what the matter is with America if they can't resonate with this.

I will say it doesn't help that the media are dissing the Rays fans, like they shouldn't be watching this because they haven't all year why start now....

I think that those who only look at the bottom line (advertisers, etc.) should consider that a LOT will depend on how these two teams mesh when they play each other, and how competitive it is.  Except for the ALCS, all of the baseball playoff series this year have been fairly dull.  I think that this has potential to be a very exciting series, unless one of the teams catches fire and the other doesn't.  Each of these teams has the potential to be incendiary.  And, I think people who watch the World Series every year will watch no matter which teams are playing.  It's the excitement of the games that will bring in those "extra" fans.

there are some ironic truths here, and the not-so common sense reasons why.

Yes Tampa is a small/medium market with a weak fan base for the Rays, so thats a problem. But,  he also states that 2 east coast teams will hurt the ratings? Why??

The reason that the ratings are low is because the games are scheduled WAY TOO LATE! WHY does MLB cater to the west coast when there are 2 East coast teams in the series? Every game is scheduled to start after 8pm EDT, so that means it will end around midnight. Most parents don't want their kids to stay up that late watching baseball. Being tired is a big deterence to watching TV.  MLB & the networks continually screw the East coast fans by catering to the west coast. And now its a lose-lose!
